Picturehouse Members’ Short Film Competition – we have a winner!

Membership roundel-01Earlier this year we launched the Picturehouse Members’ Short Film Competition, reaching out to our creative audience and asking them to submit a short-film idea. The winning Member was to have their short film fully funded and showcased in the trailer reels before every feature film at Picturehouse Cinemas.

We received more than 500 entries to the competition and four treatments were selected for the shortlist. Now the votes are in from our esteemed judging panel and Picturehouse Members, and we are very pleased to announce our winning entry…

A big congratulations to Ritzy Member Rosie Baldwin, whose treatment for We Rise has been selected as the winning entry.

We Rise is a documentary featuring a rock band made up of adults with learning disabilities. The film would demonstrate powerfully how people can come together and express themselves through music. You can read the full treatment here.

Rosie is now working with creative agency McCann London to develop the treatment and begin pre-production.

“Although competition entries were high in both number and quality, Rosie’s take on the theme of ‘belonging’ stood out for its power and humanity. We’re really looking forward to helping her bring her vision to life.” – McCann London.

A big thank you to everyone on our judging panel: Asif Kapadia (director, SennaAmy), Barbara Broccoli (producer, SkyfallSPECTRE), Danny Perkins (CEO of StudioCanal), Ben Roberts (director of BFI Film Fund), Kate Gardiner (head of Fox Searchlight UK), Tim Bevan (producer, The Theory Of EverythingLes Misérables), Tessa Ross (executive producer, Slumdog Millionaire12 Years A Slave), Clare Binns (director of programming and acquisitions, Picturehouse Cinemas), Edith Bowman (presenter), Lolly Thomson (McCann London co-president), Charles Gant (film critic, HeatThe Guardian) and all of the Picturehouse Members who voted or submitted a treatment themselves.

We Rise will play exclusively on Picturehouse Cinemas’ screens later in the year. We’ll follow Rosie’s journey over the next couple of months and will bring you the latest behind-the-scenes news.
