TIME AND RELATIVES

Damian Street, Member of Cinema City.

A young boy who belongs to a large family notices that time actually slows down each time a relative joins the room at a family gathering. With enough relatives, time travel may be possible!

FADE IN:

INT. LIVING ROOM – DAY

CLOSE UP OF AN OLD CLOCK

The second hand ticking loudly – tick!

Off screen we hear chatter and the making of tea.

PAN TO 5-8 year old ANDY HARRISON’s staring at the clock intently, he looks bored as any young boy on best behavior. He rests his head on one arm absent-mindedly while playing with his toy dinosaur. This was given as a bribe to make up for the ordeal his parents are putting him through.

His family has come together at his GRAN’s family gathering. Andy is playing with his dinosaurs. The adults are split in several rooms. They can be heard inaudibly off screen

SLOW PAN CLOSE UP OF CLOCK

CLOCK – Tick!

ANDY

(Simultaneously, under his breath)

Cut back to Andy, he is lost in thought.

CUT TO MID-SHOT OF ROOM

Andy’s Aunt enters the room

CUT TO CLOCK

Almost imperceptibly the second hand slows further

CUT TO ANDY

The boy’s face light’s up, he is having a Eureka moment.

He stands bolt upright and dashes out of the room.

CUT TO GRAN

GRAN

(chuckles to herself)

That orange juice must’ve gone

right through him.

MONTAGE OF ANDY PULLING ELDERLY RELATIVES THROUGH THE DOOR. ALTHOUGH THE DIALOGUE FLOWS IN STRUCTURE WE CUT TO A DIFFERENT RELATIVE TALKING TO ANDY

ANDY

(points to the clock)

Look…

In the now very crowded room everyone turns to look at the clock…

SLOW PAN ZOOM TO THE CLOCK-

The second hand is struggling to go forward. As if an elastic band is pulling on it. It slows and hangs quivering as if ready to fall over a precipice.

ANDY

Come on, come on…

Not quite enough…

Cut to door as an elderly dog ROVER sheepishly makes it’s way into the room.

CUT to the clock. As released from a great bow, the clock hands spin backwards. The shadows and light of the room go crazy, as if the sun was setting and rising outside. Everyone is in shock, not knowing what was going on. Everyone except ANDY…

As suddenly as it had begun it stops. Silence

CLOCK – Tick

MUM

Wha.., what happened ?

The tea ripples in the cups, THWUMP…

MID SHOT – THE WHOLE, NOW RATHER OVERCROWDED ROOM FULL OF RELATIVES TURN ROUND TO FACE THE CURTAINED WINDOWS, LIT BRIGHTLY FROM BEHIND.

Andy rushes to the window, his face full of wonder.
