THROWN OUT

Sam Brewster, Member of Hackney Picturehouse.

A writer balls up an unsatisfactory page and throws it out into the world, only for it to be discovered by an appreciative reader.

FADE IN:

EXT. WINDOW – DAY

It’s a lovely Summer’s day; we’re outside an OPEN WINDOW on the top floor of a London Townhouse.

We can hear TYPING SOUNDS coming from inside, then the SOUND OF PAPER being pulled out of a typewriter. A DISGRUNTLED NOISE, then the PAGE BEING SCREWED UP.

Suddenly, a BALL OF PAPER is tossed out of the OPEN WINDOW. It rolls down the roof, bounces out the gutter and falls…

EXT. PLAZA – DAY

…Landing in the middle of a PLAZA. It’s surrounded by fast moving, well dressed feet, belonging to crowds of commuters. Someone’s shoe brushes the BALL, causing it to wobble slightly. We hear it make a sound…

BALL OF PAPER

Uooh…

More people pass. A fast moving high-heeled lady nears…

BALL OF PAPER

Oooh!

The BALL OF PAPER is kicked, then knocked around by two or three commuters, bouncing from one side of the PLAZA to the other. It makes sounds of pain with each kick.

BALL OF PAPER

Ooh! Ouch! Aaah! Ooof!

Suddenly, it’s kicked hard out of frame. It lands under a WHEELIE BAG and gets dragged along…

BALL OF PAPER

Arrggghhhghghg!

…Until it pops out and falls down a FLIGHT OF STAIRS. An OVERHEAD WIDE SHOT reveals crowds hurrying down the stairs, whilst an OLD MAN struggles upwards. The OLD MAN pauses to watch the ball as it falls, one step at a time.

BALL OF PAPER

Ow. Ow. Ow. Ow. Ow.

EXT. STREET – DAY

The wind rolls the BALL OF PAPER quickly down a pavement. A couple are arguing as the BALL OF PAPER passes underneath a wardrobe being held up by them…

COUPLE 1

No, the back’s much easier.

COUPLE 2

No, the front is!

The BALL OF PAPER rolls on. It passes a STATIONARY STORE…

BALL OF PAPER

Oooh!

… But the wind carries it past.

BALL OF PAPER

Aww.

EXT. PARK – DAY

The BALL OF PAPER rolls to a stop. Pigeons come into shot inspecting the ball.

BALL OF PAPER

Oooi. OI!

The pigeons leave.

The BALL OF PAPER sighs, and begins to sob.

BALL OF PAPER

Boo hoo hoo.

Sniff.

A STREET CLEANER is approaching. The BALL OF PAPER is panics.

BALL OF PAPER

Aah… AAH!

GNNNNNHHH!

It grunts, trying to move, without any success. The STREET CLEANER gets closer and closer; he’s just about to sweep up the BALL OF PAPER, when a WOMAN swoops down and picks it up.

BALL OF PAPER

Oh!

The cleaner leaves.

Whilst walking, the WOMAN opens up the BALL OF PAPER. She casually looks at the page and begins to read. As she does, her pace slows until she stops in her tracks.

Her face contorts into a look of wonder, then a smile.

She sits on a bench and reads feverishly. Finishing, she stares into space, looking serene.

She carefully smooths out the paper on her thigh, folds it, and slides it into her pocket. She then gets up and carries on with her walk, a spring in her step.

THE END.
