A city-dwelling scarecrow called Daniel comes to a realisation.
EXT. PLAYING FIELDS – DAY
A pair of blackbirds dance around in a playing field. DANIEL, 29, hides in a bush and watches nervously as they fly away. He breathes a sigh of relief. As he emerges from the bush we note that DANIEL is in fact a human scarecrow.
EXT. BUS STOP – DAY
Daniel is dozing off at the bus stop. Most people ignore him but a couple of passers-by are clearly perturbed by what they see. One man shakes his head with a look of disdain. A bus arrives.
INT. PRINTING FACTORY – DAY
Daniel is working away in a printers factory. A manager-type slaps down a large stack of A4 flyers on his desk.
You’ve mucked up the bleed again, Daniel!
Daniel looks up sheepishly.
I’ll get it right next time, Jane.
A colleague glances over at Daniel and offers a look as if to say, “don’t worry about it, mate”. Daniel looks down at the stack of flyers. The image shows a smug property developer and a newly built apartment block. The banner reads: “Home is Where the Heart is”
INT. FOSTER HOME – DAY (FLASHBACK)
Eight-year old Daniel sits in a common room watching cartoons on TV. Suddenly a group of children burst into the room squawking like birds. Each child wears a black bin-liner over their body and a homemade yellow beak on their face. Together they break into song:
Daniel’s a scaredy-crow and doesn’t
have any parents…
There’s an awkward pause as the ringleader stares down at Daniel. Another child breaks the silence, ”
But none of us have any parents, Sam.
INT. PRINTING FACTORY – DAY
Daniel removes his apron and clocks out for the day. A colleague calls out as he leaves, “see ya Daniel!”
EXT. STREET / WOODLAND – DAY
Daniel walks along a busy high street with his head held low. We cut, to see him now he walking through a quiet woodland.
EXT. WHEAT FIELD – DAY
Daniel stands at a clearing in the woodland looking out on a large wheat field as if it were another planet. The sun feels warm on his face and hands. He steps on to the golden crops and continues on with curious wonder. Suddenly he spots a group of blackbirds in the middle of the field. Daniel stops dead in his tracks. He looks back towards the woodland which now seems a hundred miles away. He anxiously turns his gaze back toward the birds. Tension builds until suddenly there are thousands of blackbirds squawking menacingly like a scene from Hitchcock’s The Birds. The noise is deafening and Daniel crouches down in fear. He thinks back to the words on the flyer, and then…
The noise peters out and we hear a female voice shout, “shoo!”. Daniel looks up to see the small group of blackbirds scatter. He turns around and is startled to see a female scarecrow standing only a few feet away. She’s attractive and confident. Daniel’s eyes widen as she greets him, “hi”.
Cut to black.
