Marseilles, 1975. Young investigating magistrate Pierre Michel (played by Oscar winner Jean Dujardin, The Artist) decides to tackle the French Connection, a massive transatlantic heroin smuggling operation led by ruthless kingpin Gaëtan ‘Tany’ Zampa (Gilles Lellouche). Michel embarks on a personal crusade against Zampa, and will eventually have to put his life on the line.
Loosely based on a true story, The Connection is a gorgeous French thriller and character study. Director Cédric Jimenez takes the classic police procedural and spins it into into a stylish, slow-burning drama with shades of Scorsese. Dujardin and Lellouche are at the top of their form as the obsessive cop and terrifying gangster whose cat-and-mouse game reveals surprising similarities between them.
