Sniffy About The EIFF?
Well, there hasn’t been great press about the Edinburgh Film Festival for what was always going to be a transitional year.
But I had a good time there, in particular at the late night show of Polyester with recorded introduction from the lovely John Waters. This was a packed screening of a sparkling new print.
For those of you who don’t know (shame on you!) POLYESTER was released in 1981, starring Divine and using the wonderful Odorama technology devised by Waters himself. In other words, you got a scratch and sniff card with numbered dots. When a number appears on the screen, you scratch the related dot on your card and voila! – you smell the rose you see on screen, or the smelly trainers etc (not so nice).
What joy though! The film’s just full of life and bustle and great fun even without the scratch and sniff gimmick, which was recreated for the Edinburgh show presented by Midnight Movies & Little Joe Magazine.
Such a treat to see these things on the big screen.
