Hits & Misses – Karate Kid vs A-Team
Who would win in a fight – THE KARATE KID or THE A-TEAM? “The A-Team” I hear you cry, because there are four of them and they are grown-ups, and the Karate Kid is, well a kid. But Nooooo. The Karate Kid kicked butt at the US box office this weekend, karate chopping its way to the number one spot. Mr Miyagi would be proud.
Previous box office-prediction-type-folks had thought that THE A-TEAM and THE KARATE KID would have similar returns on their opening weekends, but in the battle of the 80’s remakes, Hannibal and chums only took half that of The Karate Kid, placing it in second place in the box office charts and not expected to do much better in the coming days.
SHREK FOREVER AFTER, although being knocked off the top spot, is still going strong, and has broken the $200m mark, proving (if more proof were needed) that 3D films have got sustainable audience pulling power.
Talking of pulling power, Russell Brand’s GET HIM TO THE GREEK has experienced the smallest decline among last week’s four new releases. KILLERS, however may want to turn their guns on themselves and put us out of our misery as they had a 48% decline since opening.
In the UK, BROOKLYN’S FINEST were obviously a dud bunch as they had disappointing returns, as did LETTERS TO JULIET. GREENBERG proved that mumblecore fans do actually leave the house, giving it a good opening weekend.
SEX & THE CITY 2 and PRINCE OF PERSIA are still residing in the top ten.
