New Moon has a massive worldwide opening

November 23, 2009

This weekend has all been about THE TWILIGHT SAGA: NEW MOON which opened to gargantuan numbers around the world, $118m from 24 countries. In the UK, its opening day figure of £4.6m is the second highest opening day in history behind A QUANTUM OF SOLACE (£4.9m).

2012 slipped to second spot with just under £3.5m this weekend, taking its total to £12.9m in ten days.

Two Picturehouse Recommends titles opened this weekend and both made it into the top ten. The Coen brothers’ A SERIOUS MAN made it into the 8th spot with just over £300k and Steven Soderbergh’s THE INFORMANT! scraped into the 10th spot with £179k over three days.

Across the Pond
THE BLIND SIDE, Sandra Bullock’s new football film, exceeded expectations and kicked off to a fantastic start. Together with NEW MOON, both female-led films, helped the top ten soar to a jaw-dropping $245m this weekend.

Sony will be disappointed with their animated comedy PLANET 51 which took in a lukewarm $12.6m.

Now in its third weekend, Lionsgate’s awards contender PRECIOUS, expanded into moderate national release (from 174 locations to 629) and nearly doubled its weekend gross with an estimated $11m. In comparison, Oscar winner NO COUNTRY FOR OLD MEN expanded nationally this same weekend in 2007 from 148 to 860 sites while also in its third week and grossed $7.8 for a weaker $9,043.

PRECIOUS‘ success is set to run and run with more venues being added on Wednesday for the holiday weekend.
