UP still top in UK while PARANORMAL ACTIVITY moves to number one in the US

Third weekend in the top spot for Pixar’s UP with a weekend gross of £3.8m taking its total box office to £19.6m to date.

Highest new entry this week is SAW VI which opened in 377 sites to the tune of £1.7m. The excellent FANTASTIC MR. FOX opened in 3rd spot with £1.5m. Haven’t you seen it yet? Good to see DOCTOR PARNASSUS passing the £2m mark this weekend.

Also worth mentioning is THE COVE, documentary making at its most vital and as thrilling as a Jason Bourne film – opened in 27 cinemas this weekend and if one of them is anywhere near you, see this film!

Across the Pond
The final weekend before Halloween saw SAW VI open against indie sensation PARANORMAL ACTIVITY – now in its 5th week. After a month of building the buzz, Paramount went fully wide with its no-budget ghost story, seizing the top spot with an estimated $22m. Its gross increased by 12% from last weekend. SAW VI was left eating dust as it only managed to attract $14.8m this weekend – the worst debut ever in the profitable franchise’s history. Perhaps audiences are beginning to tire of gory torture/ slasher formulas whilst PARANORMAL uses basic but creative techniques to deliver an excellent ghost story (we saw a sneak preview last week and it’s excellent).

WHERE THE WILD THINGS ARE fell 56% in its 2nd weekend to an estimated $14.4m.

Jamie Fox and Gerard Butler have scored a winner with LAW ABIDING CITIZEN. The action thriller remained strong in its 2nd weekend, dropping only 40% to an impressive estimated $12.7m.

By mid-week PARANORMAL will swipe ZOMBIELAND’s short lived title – ‘2009’s top grossing horror pic’.
