UP still up while WILD THINGS tops US B.O.

October 19, 2009

Pixar’s UP held on to the top spot quite comfortably in its second weekend, grossing just over £5m at 753 cinemas.

After opening at number one in the US last weekend, COUPLES RETREAT could only manage 2nd place with £1.8m from 380 sites. Terry Gilliam’s Picturehouse Recommends title, THE IMAGINARIUM OF DOCTOR PARNASSUS opened in 3rd place with £0.9m from 266 cinemas.

Across the Pond
Where The Wild Things AreSpike Jonze’s WHERE THE WILD THINGS ARE, an adaptation of the children’s book of the same name, was top of the box office this weekend. Taking an estimated $32.5 M averaging at $8.69 from 3,735 cinemas. The film has received mostly positive reviews and had a strong marketing presence. Jonze has done well, adapting a 100-minute film from a nine-sentence picture book.

LAW ABIDING CITIZEN slipped into the number two spot, offering something more grown up (and less plot based) for action fans. Starring Gerard Butler and Jamie Foxx, the R-rated film isn’t too far removed from Liam Neeson’s unlikely revenge blockbuster, TAKEN, and despite less than favourable reviews it took $21.3 M from 2,890 theatres.

The star of the Stateside box-office is still the ultra low budget PARANORMAL ACTIVITY in the 3rd spot, which has been sold almost entirely on word of mouth and reviews on social networking websites. Over three weeks of limited sales, have seen it take $20.2 M and seen it move to 760 theatres from only 159 last weekend. The film looks like it will repeat the success of THE BLAIR WITCH PROJECT almost matching the dollar average. Not bad for a film with an $11,000 budget.

Last weeks number one, COUPLES RETREAT, dropped an estimated 48%, but it still the only comedy in the chart taking a total of $63.3 M over ten days, and is now released internationally we can expect a steady growth despite the trend of less than enthusiastic reviews.
