Hits & Misses – Time Traveler’s Wife tops a slow weekend at the UK B.O.

August 17, 2009

Another very quiet weekend at the UK Box Office with only two films breaking the £1m mark and only £10m accumulated overall. The Time Traveler’s Wife opened at the number one spot with a mere £1,410,333. The adaptation of Audrey Niffenegger’s best-selling novel had the smallest opening figure to top the box office since The House Bunny opened with £894,188 in October 2008. Aliens In The Attic managed £1,322,528 to open in second and that figure includes two days of previews last week.

G.I. Joe dropped 42% to the 5th spot in the UK but remained at the top of the worldwide box office as it approaches the $200m mark, while the eagerly awaited (by me anyway) District 9 enjoyed a $37m opening weekend to top the US Box Office. The Peter Jackson produced sci-fi thriller with a supposed $30m budget, exceeded expectations and looks like becoming a fairly hefty earner for Sony. It opens here on 4 September.

Back at home, Sin Nombre opened with £55,587 from 23 screens; Mesrine: Killer Instinct’s second week added £89,969 from 64 screens, a 27% week-on-week drop, to reach £332,415; Coco Before Chanel broke £1.5m in its third week as it inches towards La Vie En Rose (£1.78m) and the spot for the 3rd biggest French hit at the UK Box Office.

Teen flick Banslam opened with a paltry £628,957 to claim 8th spot and only made the top ten thanks to £288,280 made from two days of previews. A Perfect Getaway fared even worse managing only £325,385 in its first weekend, good enough for 12th spot.
