Cannes Diary – Day 4
Weather wise, we were back on track this morning – blue skies and glorious sunshine, perfect weather for a meeting on a boat…
Audiard’s A PROPHET got the day off to a very solid start. A young prisoner climbs the criminal ranks while working for a Corsican gang during his sentence. This is European crime genre of a very high order, and should appeal to fans of last year’s GOMORRAH.
Birds Eye View held a panel discussion today: The Women. A full house packed the UK pavilion to hear six female filmmakers who all have films at this year’s festival. A broad discussion about everything to do with their work and being women filmmakers in a male dominated arena. A captivated audience chaired by festival director Rachel Millward. Check out their blog.
Ang Lee’s TAKING WOODSTOCK provided some much needed light relief to the official competition. A beautiful, languid look at the music festival from the perspective of a few of the organisers. A hilarious turn by Imelda Staunton and a quite brilliant cameo by Liev Schreiber as a woman. Getting middling reviews from the critics, but leaving us with a nice mellow high.
That boat…a couple of us had a very ‘Cannes’ meeting on a boat today and met Happy-Go-Lucky star Sally Hawkins – she’s a very cool cat.
